Lyrics

I am not Jesus, though I have the same initials
I am the man who stays home and does the dishes
And how was your day?
Is that woman still trying to do your head in?
A man told me to beware of 33
He said, "It was not an easy time for me"
But I'll get through
even though I've got no miracles to show you

I'd like to make this water wine
but it's impossible
I've got to get these dishes dry

I'll read a story if it helps you sleep at night
I've got some matches if you ever need a light
Oh I am just a man
but I am doing what I can to help you

I'd like to make this water wine
but it's impossible
I've got to get these dishes dry

And I'm not worried that I will never touch the stars
'cos stars belong up in heaven
and the earth is where we are
Oh yeah

And aren't you happy just to be alive?
Anything's possible
You've got no cross to bear tonight
No not tonight
No not tonight

I am not Jesus though I have the same initials

Jarvis' comments

This bloke had been talking to me at a party one night, and I happened to mention that it was going to be my 33rd birthday quite soon. He very kindly told me that I was about to have a mid-life crisis, because he reckoned that there's this theory: that because Jesus Christ was crucified at the age of 33, men get to 33 and kind of realise that they're not going to be Jesus - they're not going to be the new messiah or whatever. I was riding my bicycle to the rehearsal room when the first two lines of the song came into my head. It got me thinking that visible achievements like becoming famous... maybe in the public eye that's quite a big thing, but smaller kind of more mundane domestic things in a way are more heroic because there's no glory to be got from it - you don't get a round of applause for doing the dishes. I prevented myself from having a mid-life crisis by writing that song.
